Dementia Care Therapy

Staying active and engaged makes a genuine difference to the well-being of someone living with dementia. The right activity at the right moment can really reduce anxiety, prompt a memory, start a conversation or make our residents’ day feel more enjoyable.

At Kingfishers, our dedicated team creates a range of effective dementia activities in Buckinghamshire, fully customised to each resident as an individual.

When your loved one moves into Kingfishers, they will not be scheduled for activities before we get to know them. We talk with families, go through their history and learn who they are, what they have always enjoyed and what makes them feel at ease. Our dementia activities in Buckinghamshire are then planned around that information, adjusting as we get to know each resident better over time.

The programme includes lots of dementia-friendly activities like reminiscence therapy, music, arts and crafts, flower arranging, baking, gentle exercise and regular trips into Bourne End village and the surrounding area.

We also run events throughout the year that families are invited to, including seasonal celebrations and our Christmas dinner, which families have often described as restaurant-grade. These occasions matter to us because we know how much it means to share those moments with your loved one.

Kingfishers is a luxury boutique care home set in a beautiful Edwardian building and it’s worth noting that we never use agency staff. Our carers delivering dementia care therapy are a permanent, long-serving team and the trust your loved one builds with them over time is central to the quality of care they receive here.

Types of Dementia We Support

Our fully trained team cares for residents living with different types of dementia. We approach dementia activities and daily life in a way that is led by your loved one’s diagnosis, how they are feeling and what works for them as an individual.

We are also fortunate to have our own on-site GP who works closely alongside our care team and plays an important role in how we look after each resident’s health day to day.

We support…

Alzheimer’s disease

Routine and recognition are two of the most stabilising things we can offer a resident with Alzheimer’s. At Kingfishers, we work hard to ensure your loved one’s day has a routine they can rely on, with knowledgeable staff, spaces and familiar objects around them. Bringing personal belongings from home is encouraged, allowing our team to draw on all the details families share with us to make interactions feel natural and grounded in who your loved one is.

Lewy body dementia

Residents with Lewy body dementia can experience visual hallucinations and noticeable changes in alertness from one part of the day to the next. Our team is trained to respond calmly and we keep the environment as low in stimulation as possible. Medication needs particularly careful management with this diagnosis, so having our own GP on site means we can coordinate prescribing decisions promptly and safely.

Vascular dementia

Fatigue is common with vascular dementia, so our team keeps dementia activity sessions shorter and checks in with your loved one regularly throughout the day. Having a doctor on site is particularly helpful here, as physical health often needs close monitoring alongside the dementia itself and any changes can be picked up and acted on quickly.

Frontotemporal dementia

The behavioural and personality changes that come with frontotemporal dementia can be among the most difficult for families to witness. Our team understands this and approaches those changes with patience, never with correction or alarm. Because we know all of our residents at Kingfishers well, we can often quickly read the signs that a resident is becoming unsettled before it escalates.

Supporting Life at Our Dementia’s Care Home

Kingfishers is a home first and a care setting second. Dementia residents are part of everything that happens here, including sharing the dining room, the lounges, courtyard garden and activity programme with all our residents:

Social Engagement and Community Interaction

Kingfishers have a warmth to it that families notice from the moment they walk through the door. That atmosphere comes from a team that genuinely enjoys being here and residents who feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Mealtimes are a social highlight of the day, served fresh to a standard that families have praised warmly and our events calendar gives families regular opportunities to be part of life at Kingfishers alongside their loved one.

Cognitive and Therapeutic Sessions

Reminiscence therapy is a regular part of our dementia activities in Buckinghamshire. Our team uses relevant music, photographs, personal objects and conversation to help residents connect with their own memories in a way that feels comfortable and unhurried. We pay close attention to how your loved one responds and adjust accordingly, because what works well one week may need to change the next. Families receive updates and footage from sessions so you can stay connected to what your loved one has been doing, which many relatives tell us means a great deal to them.

Physical Well-being and Movement

Movement is encouraged throughout the day here but it looks different for every resident. Gentle exercise sessions are on offer to those who want to take it easy and our lovely, landscaped courtyard garden is there for our residents who want to potter or walk outside in the fresh air. For residents who are able, outings into Bourne End village are a regular and much-enjoyed part of the week. Our dementia care team is always attentive to how each of our residents is feeling before suggesting any activity, so no one ever feels that staying in and resting is the wrong choice.

Personalised Daily Routines

The information families share with us before a resident moves in forms everything that follows. We ask about sleep, mealtimes, lifelong habits, personal preferences and the small details that make your loved one who they are. We have endless reviews from family members who mention their loved ones thoroughly enjoy taking part in activities, no matter how old they are, which is something we are incredibly proud of at Kingfishers.

A Personal Approach to Dementia Activities

Alzheimer Care Support - Buckinghamshire Care Home - Kingfishers Care Home

Our dedicated and talented coordinator spends time with our residents before putting anything to do with activities in place. Before they move in, we ask you a lot of questions about your beloved family member, because you’re the people who know them best and can tell us what is actually worth trying to ensure happiness and well-being.

Our team watches carefully and is honest with families about what they observe. Group sessions work well for certain residents and not at all for others, so we adjust accordingly rather than expecting everyone to engage with the schedule in the same way.

As your loved one settles into life at Kingfishers, that approach to dementia therapy continues to evolve based on what we learn about them.

Our dementia-friendly activities also extend well beyond scheduled sessions, with staff spending time with residents individually throughout the day, and those interactions being taken just as seriously as anything on our timetable. This can include friendly conversations, time outdoors in the garden or sitting with other residents in the lounge, which can be as settling for your loved one as any organised activity for dementia.

Visits are always welcome at Kingfishers. Our helpful team will always make time to speak with you. So, if something is on your mind between visits, please feel free to call us anytime.
